Catwalk Hair: Demure vs. Debonair

Sometimes choosing a new hairstyle can be such an endeavor - cutting out magazine clippings, trawling the web for pictures of the perfect shade of red or just generally despairing in the fact that your face is too round for bangs. Well, for that exact reason, I gave up on trying to be inventive with my hair a while ago. I've chosen my signature style and I stick to it. However, for those of you that are more experimental, I'm sure the hair mags are piling up, the salon appointments looming.

I'm no Toni & Guy but judging by the SS12 catwalks there are 2 styles that are reigning supreme - disheveled chic and lustrous sleek. Bora Aksu and Lako Bukia both chose relaxed hairstyles for their collection - giving them a more girlie and romantic feel. On the other hand, Dans La Vie, Swedish School of Design and Eudon Choi didn't hesitate to slick back their locks for a sexy androgynous feel.

I've got to say, if I'll be trying anything at all, I'll be jumping on the wet look bandwagon. It's vampish, it's seductive and it's powerful.

Music Meets Fashion

Anyone ever listen to their iPod and imagine really cool scenarios in their head? Music videos, catwalk shows, getting married to Joel Kinnaman - I know you've done it! Well, over the years, the music I've listened to has had a huge effect on the clothes I wear and still does. My taste in music is a virtual melting pot of practically anything from folk music to dubstep so I thought I'd have a little fun and share 4 outfits with you that are inspired by what I'm listening to right now. Want to have a go? Put on your favourite song and get creative on Polyvore. I'd love to see your style so leave your links in the comment box below!

212 - Azealia Banks
This song is fierce and punchy with a back beat that makes me want to dance wildly on tables (note to DJ: play at your own risk). Immediately, I was inspired to style studs with neon and a low cut bustier adds a risque edge to the outfit. I would say it represents a modern femme fatale with a slice of androgyny.

Summer Lips: Pretty Pouts for the Picturesque Weather

Summer is all about glowing skin, colour pop nails and luscious beauty looks. This week I'm all about adorning my pout with the season's hottest beauty buys. Whether you're relaxing on the beach, drinking Pimms in the park or summer lovin' with your beau Grease style, a little bit of gloss or a slick of lippie can go a long way. So, which tribe are you in this summer? Provocative Pinks, Barely There Nudes or Colour Pop Oranges?

Take inspiration from the mood boards below:

Lip Tribe: Provocative Pink

Lip Tribe: Barely There Nudes

Lip Tribe: Colour Pop Orange

Still can't decide? Try a bit of each but don't forget to prime your lips first! Burts Bees products are all time favourites for me and I really love the lip scrubs at Lush too - they're wonders for making you're lips super soft in seconds.

Legalize Gay

I can't actually remember when these tops came out at American Apparel but I've always loved the statement they made. Although I'm heterosexual, I've always been in favour of equal rights for the LGBT community.

Today, I'm making an even louder statement in candy floss jeans from Oasis, a neon clutch from River Island and the studded heels I debuted in my previous outfit post.

Valentina Zelyaeva for Velvet.

Here are just a few shots from the pool party editorial shot by Marcus Ohlsson for the June edition of Velvet magazine. I'm so in love with the bright location and azure tones featured throughout the shoot. I'm on the hunt for an aqua blue midi skirt and some floaty palazzo trousers to match!

Teenage Dirtbag.

I'm a busy bee today - running a whole load of errands. Of course, there's space for a spot of window shopping. I can't wait to sit in the garden, eat ice lollies and listen to songs from my childhood years. Top of the list: 'Teenage Dirtbag' by Wheatus.

I'm wearing my MTV shirt from the men's section in River Island with my flirty, 3-D florals skirt and brand new spiked heels from Missguided. I love them!

New York, New York!

Right now, I'm really inspired by New York. It's the city of dreams for many young hopers and a Mecca for fashion lovers. I'm yearning for a week in the Big Apple - shopping, searching for inspiration and drinking in sights. Here's what I'd be packing in my (imaginary) suitcase:

The Pastel Rinse: Treat Your Tresses

This season it's all about the sweet shop. Pastels, Curly Wurlies and French Fancies... for your head. Summer's the only time when you can dye your hair more colours than a bag of Pic'n'Mix and still be chic - so take advantage of the season and go candy coloured. Right now, I can't get enough of pastels. Cotton candy pink, lilac rinses, silver blues: hair heaven.

Want to try the trend? Take inspiration from the recent Chanel Cruise Collection and the editorials below.

Beaufox

It's such a great feeling when something gorgeous comes through to you in the post. It's even better when you try them on for the first time and realize that you're in love! So, you can imagine my elation when I tried on the slouchies kindly sent to me by Beaufox for the first time.

The summer heat has set in and the evenings have become light and balmy. With half of Britain clambering to their back gardens to basque in the sultry rays, I think it's safe to say that the top two things on the nation's wishlist are comfort and style (wouldn't want the neighbours to see you in your banana  pyjamas). Well, Britain. Meet Beaufox.

The airy, cotton trousers are inspired by pyjamas and have a super relaxed feel. They're easy to wear indoors as lounge trousers but, personally, I prefer to wear them out. I mean, who could resist? They're   comfy, they're versatile and they tick the tie-dye trend box. If it's good enough for Olivia Palermo ...

I'll also be wearing these high-waisted, as a beach coverup and turned up at the ankles for a sporty jogger look. So many options, so little time!

Slouchy trousers, Beaufox
Jumper, River Island,
Floral headband, Asos
Studded loafers, Romwe
Sunglasses, Primark

Complete your summer look and check out the rest of the range now.

p.s. Believe me: once you get a pair,  you'll be jumping around with joy too!

Perfect Perspex

I've been waiting for a while now to try out the transparent trend but I wanted to wait until the sun came out so that the power of perspex could take it's full effect. It's all about making a statement and perspex heels, in particular, have got me reeling. With the sun shining through them, they remind of crystal stalagmites and you only have to look at the set of the Chanel AW12 show to know that they're so hot right now. So, take note from the sunny weather and turn up the heat with your wardrobe.

Mundane Monday

It's just another Mundane Monday. The dancing shoes are off, the party's over and it's time to slide back into daily life. If any of you are sighing behind your desks or slumping wretchedly in your seats, I am with you. There's nothing worse than waking up and realising that it's no longer the weekend but there is something that might just get me out of bed (for a little less than a £1,000).

Tailored separates are having a fashion moment right now and I'm ready to embrace them. They're sophisticated, feminine and oh so easy to wear. Plus, smart and casual in one piece? Life saver!

Here's how I'll be wearing the trend in 3 different ways:

Old Pine - Ben Howard

I have two major obsessions lately: platform trainers and Ben Howard's newest album. I am absolutely not a trainers person. Plimsolls, yes, and I did try Converse for a while but it wasn't really my style. Then the hi top craze started but I wasn't having any of it. However, combine the hi top shape with a hidden platform and I'm officially in love. I love these colorful kicks from Ash, Boohoo and Isabel Marant but I'd probably stick to an all white pair to seamlessly take me from summer to winter. What do you think? Are you embracing your inner wild child with rainbow footwear or would you rather stick to the classics? Leave your thoughts in the comment box below.

Now, let's not forget my second fixation. If you're searching for a great soundtrack for summer, you need to download the album Every Kingdom by Ben Howard. If you're a little short on change though, go for Old Pine and The Wolves. You won't be disappointed!

Set created on Polyvore.

Suburban Jungle

Today, I'm wearing my leopard pea coat from River Island paired with boyfriend jeans. I added snake skin midi pumps and cat eye sunglasses for a nod to this season's animal obsession. Well, it's almost the weekend... any excuse to go wild.

Sound Off: 3/4 Leggings - What Were We Thinking?!

Sound Off
noun |saʊnd ɒf|
  1. An unofficial rant or discussion about anything and everything in fashion.
In order to have her own opinions heard, a fashion girl must always have a sound off every now and then.

Ok, Fashionistas - own up. How many of you sported 3/4 length leggings 2 or 3 years ago when it was cool? Don't be ashamed, my hand is raised too.  Under dresses, skirts and shorts. On their own with an "oversized" t-shirt... Cutting my leg off at the calf and making my 5'3 frame appear even stumpier!

Ok, I take back the previous statement. We should all be very ashamed!

I hate to be the pretentious fashion girl, scanning the general public for hideous and offensive clothing but when it comes to cut off leggings, I make an exception.

Don't do it, ladies! Not only do they shorten your legs but they're deceptively translucent when you bend over. Whether your pretty, lacy things or granny knickers, I'm indubitably sure that the general public prefers not to see either.

So, let's make a promise - a pact: I solemnly swear on my [insert most expensive shoes in your closet] that I will never ever EVER wear 3/4 length leggings again and, should I find a pair in my wardrobe, I will burn them as an apologetic sacrifice to the fashion gods. Oh and I'll get rid of those granny panties too.

Now, I'm going to leave the subject alone before I go into cardiac arrest but let me know what you think in the comment box below. Are you still kicking it in calf-lengths or are you all for the crusade against the cut-off, stretchy things?

Why I Should Be the New WhatsTrend Blogger!

I could very easily sit here and write you a story about how I've been living and breathing fashion since the very day I was born. I could tell you that I made little clothes for my dolls out of hair scrunchies and old scraps of fabric. I could describe to you the elation and passion I felt every time I designed wedding dresses or red carpet outfits for my favourite celebrities out of magazine cuttings and catalogue pictures. In fact, I could even tell you how I styled my friends in beautiful Indian saris at the age of 9 and made them put on a fashion show for my Mum (anyone remember Chanel's Paris-Bombay show? Obviously, inspired by me)...
But the truth is, that doesn't make me a good fashion blogger. So, what are the real reasons I should be the new WhatsTrend blogger?

  1. I may be fairly new to the game but I'm incredibly passionate about writing - specifically about fashion. I write on my blog every day, whether or not I think anyone else is reading, because expressing myself about the things I love is so fulfilling.
  2. I may not look like the "typical blogger" but I do not believe fashion has a size nor a class nor a face. Karl Lagerfeld may think Adele is too fat for fashion and magazines are constantly bombarding us with images of what's beautiful or perfect but I like to think that I represent the average girl. Somewhere on the "wrong" side of 100 lbs and photo shop free.
  3. I never get tired of playing with clothes, whether it's for dressing myself or styling other people (but what girl does?!) I even dream in fashion! I feel like I could bring some great, edgy outfits to the mix on the WhatsTrend network.
  4. I'm an extremely dedicated person in general. If it's something I love, I stick to it and I would be prepared to give 100% as a WhatsTrend blogger.
So, there you have it. It would be a dream come true to work with WhatsTrend.com and many thanks to the network, New Yorker and COTTDS author Cindy for giving bloggers worldwide the opportunity!

P.s. Did you get all that stuff about living and breathing fashion from an early age? Yeah? Just making sure!

Tara Starlet's Tropical Treats

What do you get when you mix this seasons two piece with the tantalizing tropical prints that have literally exploded onto the fashion scene? No, this is not a cheesy joke. No, the answer is not Carmen Miranda. Tara Starlet has released a range of cutesy, kitsch '50s pieces that are perfect for lounging on the beach or slurping a summer slushy with the girls. They're gutsy, they're colorful and they've got designer influences - bingo! Apart from the cobalt blue, high-waisted shorts, I can't get enough of the flourishing floral set inspired by Maarten Horst's SS12 look. Style with a wide brimmed hat and ankle boots in nude for safari chic. Two trends at once? Well, you know - two birds with one stone!

Having a Dark Day.

Why has it been raining all week? Springtime is supposed to be about florals and pastels but it's rained every day since I got back to London. So, on Wednesday, I decided to match the weather with an all black ensemble and I pulled out my black, woolen floppy hat for the first time to top it all off. It felt very dramatic walking through the sea of printed brollies and new season tropicals... But, until this soggy weather lets up, there's still room for a little black.

Ruby & Pink Boutique

Scarf print is everywhere. In fact, this season, it's in to adorn just about everywhere but your neck with the pretty pattern. So, when I stumbled upon the cosy, little Ruby & Pink boutique in the Ikeja City Mall - I couldn't believe my luck. There was scarf print everywhere and the smell of floral reed diffusers filled the room. I felt a little bit like I was wondering around the Versace archives (minus the leather and studs). I've got my eye on the long-sleeved printed shirts.
